Review by Larry Underwood for Talk Less, Say More: Three Habits to Influence Others and Make Things Happen Rating: Quite possibly, our society became programmed to provide way too much information, thanks to our institutions of higher learning (Rockford College, Class of '74); it always seemed the professors wanted us to be windbags, spewing out an inordinate amount of information, just to prove we really understood the material.

Nowadays, nobody wants to listen to complicated, long-winded disertations; they want to know (in 140 characters or less, if possible) what they need to know, quickly and concisely. They don't have the time or patience to listen to any rambling messages. Cut to the chase.

Clearly, Connie Dieken understands that; her advice is wonderfully concise, and certainly right on the money. It's perfect for the fast (and getting faster) paced world we live in, where everyone's hooked on Twitter or Facebook. Without a doubt, now more than ever, "less is more" for engaging others to receive your message.

Review by Jay Rossi for Talk Less, Say More: Three Habits to Influence Others and Make Things Happen Rating: Connie Dieken's book, "Talk Less Say More", has been nothing short of a major marketing breakthrough for me and my projects. So well-written, I was able to get through it in one night. Very organized thoughts and techniques fill the pages! And in such a way that it was very easy for me to institute the wisdom immediately.
Her insights are so simply put that anyone can understand her great wisdom and put it into practice. I found myself understanding human nature better and, consequently, using her techniques without even realizing...both professionally and personally.
I only got the book about a week ago and I've already seen some success stories in my life, all of which have been obstacles I didn't want to touch because I didn't fully understand them.

I cannot tell you how many times my Mexican gardener, god bless him and his 3 sons, has butchered my Chrysanthemums and botched the edging around the gazebo. Or the time some kids poured something on the lawn that burnt the grass and spelled out "Pendejo" or something like that. Saying "No, no no" does not work, obviously. Finally, a tool that has put us both on the same page - brought them up to an equal footing so that communication can take place. The steps are simple and I believe that anyone can make it work.

Our daughter, Bitsy, had Mexican help and I knew how hard it was for her to get those people to properly water her begonias. When we found Enrique, we were just beside ourselves. Such a nice young man! Unfortunately, his English, left something to be desired. Then, a few months ago, Bitsy - bless her heart - told us about these tapes and I've been listening to them during my hair appointments. Not only am I able to talk to Enrique, but the girls at the club are coming to me for advice with their gardeners.

Review by David Crumm for Connecting Like Jesus: Practices for Healing, Teaching, and Preaching Rating: Two years ago, sociologist and evangelical preacher Tony Campolo teamed up with a scholar in communication and spiritual formation, Mary Albert Darling, to give us an important book, The God of Intimacy and Action: Reconnecting Ancient Spiritual Practices, Evangelism, and Justice. In that book, they argued that the ancient practices of spiritual intimacy fostered in Christian community with God and with other people ultimately must be aimed at outward action, which explains the title.

In this second book, Tony and Mary actually step back to address questions that arise even before we achieve that intimacy in a religious community. How are we supposed to connect in the first place? Their title indicates their answer, writing as evangelical Christians: Like Jesus. And I do strongly recommend this book for Christian audiences. There are countless clergy and small-group leaders in churches who I've met over the years who could benefit from this book as a toolbox and inventory of smart practices in ministry.

But there's more here. Tony's career began in the academic study of sociology. Mary teaches communication at the university level. Whatever your religious background, there are smart chapters here on conflict resolution, on developing a message for a group, even nuts-and-bolts recommendations on storytelling and public speaking.

My suggestion: Order both books. Read them. Pass them around. Discuss them in small groups. You'll have no shortage of dialogue!
